Xiaomi is known for value products that come with spec sheets beyond their price tag, and the company's latest release in India continues along this product philosophy. Meet the new Redmi 4A, Xiaomi India's latest starter smartphone.
Redmi 4A
The Redmi 4A is a budget and starter smartphone, a point that one needs to keep in mind to keep expectations grounded. In terms of product placement, the 'A' variants are budget and lower specced entries to the main lineup. So the Redmi 4A appears below the Redmi 3S and the Redmi 3S Prime in the current Xiaomi lineup (though not for long).
Since this is a budget device, the Redmi 4A skips the metal and embraces polycarbonate for its build. With the 5″ HD display and a weight of 131.5 g, the Redmi 4A will be pocket-friendly both literally and figuratively.
On the inside, the Redmi 4A is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 SoC with a quad core Cortex-A53 setup clocked at 1.4GHz. The GPU is handled by the Adreno 308. The phone comes with 2GB RAM and 16GB of storage in India, though you can also expand storage through the microSD card slot in the hybrid Dual SIM tray. The phone has a massive (for its size) 3,120 mAh battery, but as Xiaomi has made no mentions of fast charging capabilities we assume them to absent since this is a budget device. The phone also comes with an IR Blaster, which is now considered a standard across Xiaomi India's lineup.
The camera setup on the Redmi 4A consists of a 13MP f/2.2 rear camera and a 5MP f/2.2 front camera. The phone runs on MIUI 8 on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The phone also supports LTE and VoLTE over Band 5.
The Xiaomi Redmi 4A will be available from March 23rd on Mi.com and Amazon.in for a price of ₹5,999 (~$92) in Dark Grey and Gold color variants. The device will also be available in Rose Gold color variant exclusively on Mi.com from April 6th.
Increasing Manufacturing Capacity
One of Xiaomi's sore point, as we noted in our Redmi Note 4 review, is the constricted supply of the devices which forces the company to adopt a flash sales model in India. To remedy such scenarios, Xiaomi also announced its second manufacturing unit in the country.
The first manufacturing plant of Xiaomi went live in August 2015, and by March 2016, the plant was responsible for manufacturing over 75% of the devices sold in India. With the second manufacturing plant set up in partnership with Foxconn at Sri City in the State of Andhra Pradesh, Xiaomi will produce over 95% of its smartphones for sale in India within the country itself. Their combined production capacity will now be at one phone per second during operational hours.
This is a big step for Xiaomi as it reaffirms the company's commitments to the Indian market and lays the groundwork for eliminating the difficulties in purchasing their devices.
Redmi 4 and Redmi 4 Prime
Right alongside the Redmi 4A launch, Redmi India's official Twitter handle also began teasing the impending arrival of the successor to the Redmi 3S and Redmi 3S Prime.

The Redmi 4 and Redmi 4 Prime have been launched in China, so we already have a good idea on the specifications of the devices.
The Redmi 4 comes with a 5″ HD display, an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC, 2GB RAM, 16GB storage, a 4100 mAh battery and a camera setup of 13MP rear and 5MP front sensors.
The Redmi 4 Prime comes with a 5″ FHD display, a 2GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage.
The Chinese pricing of the Redmi 4 is CNY 699 (~₹6,600) while the Redmi 4 Prime is priced at CNY 899 (~₹8,500). It will be interesting to see how Xiaomi prices the device in India as a complementing product to the existing Redmi Note 4 lineup.
