As usual, most Android OEMs have been taking their time when it comes to pushing out the latest version of Android. We're even starting to see majo r2017 flagships released now and they're coming with a version of Android that was officially released in October of last year. Android 7.1.1 Nougat became official 2 months later in December, yet the number of smartphones that are actually running that version of Android is incredibly slim right now.
HMD Global, the company who has licensed the Nokia name for their new smartphones is hoping to be the exception to that rule. An executive at HMD Global recently spoke about how smartphone OEMs aren't delivering Android the way it should be and that they aim to do things better. The company has a long way to go to actually deliver on those statements but a new screenshot shows they are serious when it comes to rolling out fast updates to their phones.
Hyken Wong on Twitter posted a screenshot taken from his Nokia 6 a few days ago. The screenshot showed his device was being updated to Android 7.1.1 Nougat and that it also includes April's security patches. It's unclear if this is a full rollout or if they are simply doing a soak test to see how the update performs on the device. Either way, this is more than we're seeing from a lot of smartphone OEMs right now and it's refreshing to a company shaking things up like this.
The update will bring the Nokia 6's software up to version 00CN_3_170, and it weighs 616MB. Along with the update to Android 7.1.1 Nougat and the security patches for April, it also comes with some improvements as well. The update is said to enhance features like power saving and background management, adds support for 4G/3G dual SIM dual standby, updates the Nokia USB driver, and comes with updated versions of preloaded applications.
