Moto Z2 Play Passes Through TENAA With Reduced Battery Capacity; Lenovo Confirms

The Moto Z Play stood out in 2016 as being one of those phones that had a healthy balance between battery life and performance. The 3,510 mAh coupled with the power-efficient Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC and a 5.5″ FHD display meant that the device stood out from the crowd when it came to sheer longevity through the day. Coupled with the option to snap on a battery-focused Moto Mod, the Moto Z Play had no problem lasting a full day of heavy use and going strong into the next as well.

For a phone that had half a focus on battery life, you would expect the successor to improve along on this end. But alas, it seems that the Moto Z2 Play will regress on one of the key selling points of its predecessor.

A device that very closely resembles the Moto Z2 Play has passed through TENAA with a specified battery capacity of just 2,820 mAh. This bump down in battery life comes at the cost of making the phone a full 1mm thin, as the Moto Z2 Plays comes in at 6mm thickness (compared to the 7mm thickness of the Moto Z Play).

The TENAA listing for the XT1710-08 mentions that the device will have a 5.5″ FHD OLED display. The phone will be powered by a 2.2GHz octa-core processor, which most likely is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 — an incremental upgrade to the Snapdragon 625 inside the Moto Z Play. The Z2 Play will have 4GB RAM, 64GB of internal storage as well microSD card support, and Android 7.1.1 out of the box. The rear camera is a 12MP CMOS sensor, while the front is a 5MP front camera.

Lenovo did inadvertently 'confirm' the battery downgrade on the Moto Z2 Play as well. In a tweet reply, the company's Twitter handle mentions the device to bear 3,000 mAh battery. The spec mentioned here is not exactly the same as on the TENAA listing, but it does effectively put into stone that the device will have lower battery capacity.

With the major outline of the Moto Z2 Play now in front of us, the device does appear to be an overall regression from the Moto Z Play. The smaller battery points directly towards Lenovo focusing more on the sale of additional battery focused Moto Mods for users who want the same battery life. We hope we are wrong in this regard, but all the clues just point this way.

What are your thoughts on the Moto Z2 Play's smaller battery? Would you consider this device as a capable mid-ranger in 2017? Let us know in the comments below!
