Xperia X and X Compact Receive Android 7.1.1

Sony is rolling out a new Nougat update for the Xperia X and Xperia X Compact. The update brings both Android 7.1.1 and the new security patches, and users of these handsets should soon get a notification about the update. This comes shortly after Sony's release of the Android 7.0 update for the Xperia XA.

Back in January, we reported that Sony released the concept build of Android 7.1.1, and the company took its sweet time to roll out the build to the public. This newest update is not big, but it brings several small improvements like circular app icons support.

The Xperia X was announced at Mobile World Congress 2016. It features a 5-inch Full HD IPS LCD display, the hexacore Qualcomm Snapdragon 650, 3GB of RAM and either 32GB or 64GB of storage. A month ago, Sony also announced that their Premium Standard mid-range devices will not be discontinued.

Alongside the release of Android 7.1.1, Sony published the GPLv2-mandated kernel source. You can find them in the Xperia open source archives, and the build number is 34.3.A.0.194. Sony is one of the vendors that updates its kernel sources swiftly.

If you're using Sony Xperia X or Xperia X Compact that runs stock, you should get a notification about the update. You can also download the newest version of the firmware with Xperia Companion or by flashing an FTF image.
