Motorola has just pushed out the source code for the kernel used on the 2015 Moto X Pure for Android 7.0 Nougat. As with the other devices they release the kernel source code for, it can be found on GitHub at the link provided here and at the bottom of this article. A lot of Moto X Pure Edition owners have been waiting for this as it will allow for a boost in custom ROM and custom kernel development when it comes to the Android 7.0 Nougat software.
This is especially good for those who have been waiting for Motorola to roll out the Android 7.0 Nougat via their official OTA update channel. The device shipped with Android 5.1 Lollipop but was then updated fairly quickly to Marshmallow. Motorola has been testing the upcoming Nougat update in multiple regions for a couple of months now, but an official release has yet to start. The company had previously started Q2 of this year as their release target, but we're already passed that an there still has yet to be anything official announced.
Motorola releasing the kernel source code for the 2015 Moto X Pure Edition (aka Clark) right now is quite unique. Most OEMs (even Motorola in some cases) have a history of releasing this after an update has already started to roll out (or not releasing it). We still aren't sure exactly what is holding up this official update, but it is interesting to see that the company has decided to release the kernel source code before the stable update rollout has even been announced.
Perhaps this is a sign that Motorola is finalizing the update and is incredibly close to pushing it out to customers in the United States and elsewhere. This remains to be seen though and it's something that we will be keeping our eye out for as it is likely the last big update that will come from Motorola.
