LG Talks About How the G6 Will Take Advantage of the 18:9 Display

Last month, we saw reports talking about the upcoming G6 from LG using a display with a unique aspect ratio. We normally see Android devices with displays using a 16:9 aspect ratio, or even a 16:10 in some cases. Some of the more recent tablets have opted for a 4:3 aspect ratio, but smartphones have been sticking with conventional sizes. The report from January though, it talked about the LG G6 having an 18:9 aspect ratio (or 2:1 if you want to call it that).

Today, the company has released some details about how they will be utilizing this unique aspect ratio with their upcoming LG UX 6.0 update. LG is calling it a QHD+ FullVision display and it will have a resolution of 2,880 x 1,440 pixels. LG highlights that this added screen real estate on the top and bottom will allow you to see more of the content when you're viewing a website, reading ebooks, and can provide a more immersive experience when playing mobile games.

Next up is how LG will utilize this extra screen space for its camera UX. They want you to be able to take a photo, and review said photo simultaneously. To do this, LG has provided a Square Camera feature that divides this QHD+ Full Vision display into two identical squares. This will enable you to shoot photos in a 1:1 format (which is popular on platforms such as Instagram), and then review those photos instantly in the adjacent square. LG has also announced a new, saturated Food Mode for those who like to take photographs of their meals.

The last piece that LG touches on today is how this unique display will improve the multitasking experience. We're seeing more people using multitasking features since it's baked into Android 7.0 Nougat and LG wants to take advantage of this. So you can have a call window on one side and the calendar application in the other, or typing a memo in one window while viewing a website in the other.
