Bloomberg reports Samsung's upcoming flagship, the Galaxy S8, will have facial recognition capabilities to verify user's identity. The technology will primarily be used in mobile payment services such as Samsung Pay to provide users with enhanced security. According to the report, the Galaxy S8 will make combined use of phone's iris scanner, fingerprint sensor, and facial recognition technology to further strengthen authentication for mobile payments.
The feature will not come out-of-the-box, though. The company is currently working with banks and partners to embrace this new technology, which will likely take some months to complete. Facial recognition is not a completely new feature for Android, we have been using this feature to unlock our devices since Android 4.0 ICS, but this would be the first time it will be used to authenticate mobile purchases.
The report squares to the earlier rumors which also suggested the Galaxy S8 will feature facial recognition technology along with iris scanning capabilities.
Bloomberg's report also talks about Samsung's Virtual Assistant, allegedly called Bixby. As per Bloomberg's sources, the first version of the virtual assistant is developed largely in-house and won't make much use of US-based Viv Lab's artificial intelligence technologies that the South Korean company had acquired last year.
With the Galaxy Note 7's bitter memories behind, Samsung really needs to hit a home run with the upcoming Galaxy S8 to turn things around. Samsung has already confirmed a launch event for the Galaxy S8 on March 29th, so hopefully, we won't have to wait long to find out more about, perhaps, the most anticipated device of 2017.
