Last year, Lenovo's Moto Z line-up pulled an Apple and removed the 3.5mm headphone jack from its Moto Z series. This was widely seen as a bad move, and surprisingly, even the Moto Z force – a thick and large device – had no headphone jack despite ample room to pack one in.
The media generally didn't receive the move away from the headphone jack very well, with plenty of digital ink spilled on the subject. Luckily, it seems that Lenovo might have changed its mind: according to the latest renders from OnLeaks supplied to Android Authority, the next Moto Z Force will be bringing back the headphone jack. Yes, that's right: Lenovo is walking back its decision, possibly due to negative reviews and commentary. Below you can find a gallery that showcases the Moto Z2 Force's design:
As you can see, the Moto Z2 Force looks an awful lot like its predecessor, and that's to be expected: Moto Mods mean that these phones need to have about the same dimensions to be universally compatible with the one-size-fits-all modules. The pins are thus all in the right place, with the device's footprint being just a tad larger for its 5.5 inch 18:9 display. However, it's also a full millimeter thinner at 5.99mm. We don't know the device's battery capacity, but we've heard about its CAT 16 capabilities and we can duly expect it to pack a Snapdragon 835. Finally, and as you can see in the renders above, the phone sports a dual camera setup.
We are glad to see that Lenovo is embracing the 3.5mm headphone jack once more. The company had come up with a few solutions through software and hardware, but none were as effectively intuitive and seamless as a simple, universally-available pair of earbuds. Maybe the 3.5mm headphone jack is in need of replacement, but now's not the time according to the voices of consumers who are already invested in a perfectly-useful standard with their favorite pair of headphones, or multitude of cheap earbuds in every drawer. We can also infer that there really wasn't a size constraint that justified the decision — this device is just as large and slightly thinner, but seemingly has no issues accommodating such port, like many smaller and denser phones have no trouble either. Let's just hope other companies look at Moto's experiment and extrapolate the right conclusions.
