Android Wear was an ambitious project by Google and its level of success seems to vary depending on who you ask. The company just held its annual hardware launch event last week where they announced a plethora of new products for consumers. One glaring omission though was anything new about Android Wear and this was expounded upon when the company removed the smartwatch section from the Google Store entirely.
There is an Android Wear section on Amazon, for anyone looking for new smartwatches, but the whole series of events has had people worrying about the future of the wearable platform. Days before the hardware launch event, Google announced a new Android Wear beta program for Oreo that would start with the LG Watch Sport. The new update brings the device up to API level 26 and introduces features such as the new background restrictions and notification channels.
The company has been known to take their time with new Android Wear updates so it may take a while before the new update reaches all supported devices. This shouldn't really be a big deal thanks to a feature that was introduced in the Android Wear 2.0 update. Explained in more detail by Google Employee Hoi Lam, new features can be added to devices running Android Wear 2.0 thanks to a quick update from the companion application via the Play Store.
This can be likened to how Google pushes out new features to over a billion smartphones and tablets with updates to Google Play Services. So for Android Wear 2.0 users, a recent update just like this was rolled out just last week that added a number of changes to the platform. Mr. Lam says the following was added in that recent update and confirms that more will be arriving "in the coming months."
- 3rd party chat app support in Contacts
- Reduce accidental entry into the watch face picker
- Improve Play Store discoverability for new users
- Other features and bug fixes
