The team at Essential has been very engaged with the community since the launched of its first smartphone, the Essential Phone. Along the way, the company's stumbled a bit, but that hasn't stopped it from moving forward. The Essential Phone received a beta version of Android 8.0 Oreo last month, and on Wednesday, Essential announced an over-the-air (OTA) update for a second Oreo beta.
Android 8.0 Oreo has plenty to recommend it. In particular, Project Treble, a modular upgrade framework that makes it easier for manufacturers to issue updates, is something that many in the Android community have been looking forward to. Some phone makers decided not to ship Oreo with support for Treble, but Essential bucked the trend. Its current implementation of Treble on the Essential Phone isn't complete, but the dev team says its aiming for full Treble support in the coming 8.1 Oreo update.
Those who've been testing the company's first Oreo beta for the Essential Phone might have noticed some bugs. In a recent AMA on Reddit, Essential team members said that they'd originally planned to release the second Oreo beta last week, but that it had to be delayed due to some last-minute fixes.
True to the Essential team's word, the second Oreo beta for the Essential Phone is now available, and current Oreo testers will receive an OTA update notification for it. (If you haven't installed the first Oreo beta, note that you'll need to sideload it before you can get the second beta.)
The update includes new features and fixes, and the full changelog's here:
