Samsung’s Bixby Speaker Reportedly Aiming for a H1 2018 Release

Even though Samsung battled with the community to prevent people from remapping the dedicated Bixby button, they have continued to dedicate time on expanding the features that their voice Assistant service offers. Recently revealed trademark registration data shows they are wanting to bring Bixby to other connected devices and we already know that a connected smart speaker is planned. Now, a new report claims that Samsung is currently on schedule to release this Bixby speaker sometime during the first half of 2018.

Bixby's launch has been kind of a mess but Samsung has shown that they do not like to rely on Google when it comes to certain services. It makes sense in a way since they have their Tizen open source operating system, and in business it's smart to have backup plans in case something goes wrong with your current venture. Earlier this year Samsung announced Bixby 2.0 which added smart home device and 3rd-party developer support for the platform, signalling an upcoming expansion of the service.

A report from 6 months ago was the first time we were made aware of Samsung's plans to bring Bixby to a smart connected speaker. Report and plans of this nature don't always manifest into a consumer product, though, and it wasn't even a month later that we were told not to expect a Bixby connected speaker from Samsung anytime soon. Between evolving their Bixby platform to not feeling the need to rush to market, Samsung just didn't think they needed a product in this segment at that moment.

As Samsung plans continued we heard from the CEO of Harman who said that Samsung's Bixby speaker would be "unbeatable." However, many feel that Samsung has a lot of work to do to compete with Google in this market, let alone Amazon who currently dominates the home assistant space. Now, a new report from Bloomberg cited "people briefed on the plans" and says Samsung is aiming to release its assistant speaker during the first half of 2018. Not only that, but they are currently planning on undercutting Apple with a price point of $200. and that its focus will be on sound quality and smart home devices.
