Android Oreo-based MIUI 9 Global Beta 8.1.11 Released for the Xiaomi Mi 6

The Xiaomi Mi 6 was Xiaomi's flagship smartphone for the first half of 2017. Although it was never released in India, the Mi 6 distinguished itself with a premium list of specifications, which included a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip, 6GB of RAM with 64/128GB of storage, a 5.1-inch Full HD (1920×1080) IPS display, a dual rear camera module with twin 12MP sensors and optical image stabilization (OIS), and a 3,350mAh battery. It shipped with MIUI 8 on top of Android Nougat, and it recently received the MIUI 9 Global Stable update.

Xiaomi announced in December that it was recruiting beta testers for the Mi 6's Android Oreo update. Now, the company has released an Android 8.0 Oreo-based MIUI 9 Global Beta 8.1.11 ROM for the device, which is the first Oreo-based MIUI ROM for it. It's available as an over-the-air (OTA) update for users who were already running the MIUI 9 Global Beta ROM.

The company says that in order to install the Android Oreo-based update, Xiaomi Mi 6 users have to update their devices to MIUI 9 Global Beta 7.12.14, which is based on Android Nougat — then they'll get the OTA notification for the Android Oreo update. Users are also advised to backup their data before flashing the update.

Here's how to install the Global Beta:

  1. Download the Nougat-based MIUI 9 Global Beta 7.12.14 ROM and rename it "update.zip" (without quotation marks).
  2. Connect your device to a Windows PC via a microUSB cable and copy the downloaded ROM to the root directory of the device's internal storage.
  3. Enter the recovery mode and choose the Install from zip option.
  4. Tap the Reboot to System button when the update has finished installing.

After the system reboots, users will get the OTA notification for the Android Oreo-based MIUI 9 Global Beta update.

In related news, Xiaomi has started recruiting beta testers for the Mi Mix 2's Android Oreo update, but hasn't said when it will begin rolling out Oreo update to its other devices.
