Huawei's sub-brand Honor confirmed on Monday that the Honor 8 will not receive an upgrade to Android Oreo, even though the Honor 8 Lite and the Honor 8 Pro are both getting updates to Android Oreo with Project Treble support. A spokesperson for the company confirmed the news on Honor India's Twitter account, citing "hardware and software limitations" as the reason the upgrade won't make its way to the Honor 8.

It's potentially a symptom of the Honor 8's launch firmware, which is based on Android Marshmallow. It's not uncommon for mid-range Honor devices to get just one major update in the course of their lifecycles, and the Honor 8 got one last year — to Android Nougat. The Honor 8 Pro and the Honor 8 Lite both hit the market with Android Nougat, so they've yet to receive an upgrade to a new version of Android.
It's also possible that Huawei is excluding India variants of the Honor 8 from major updates for some reason, but that seems unlikely — India is a huge market for Honor devices.
In any case, blaming "hardware and software limitations" seem like an attempt to deflect the question. It might be that Huawei does not want to invest resources into updating the Honor 8, or that the smartphone maker's Kirin 950 devices won't be receiving the upgrade either. (That would leave the year-and-a-half-old Honor V8 and Huawei Mate 8 in the cold, as well.)
Whatever the case may be, we'll keep an eye out for any news in the future. Here's hoping that the Honor 8 receives an upgrade to Oreo, just as Honor's many other devices have already.
