Plenty of phones suffer have lackluster camera quality, particularly those in low- and mid-range markets like HMD Global's Nokia 5 and the Nokia 6. It often comes down to software post-processing, but unfortunately, it's not uncommon to see manufacturers let cameras languish after devices are released.
Thankfully, Nokia bucked the trend and released a new, completely redesigned camera app in the latest Android Oreo beta update for the Nokia 5 and the Nokia 6. The app greatly improves low-light performance on both devices, according to a report from NokiaPowerUser.
The difference is astounding. Take a look at the comparison images below:
There isn't a massive difference with the flash enabled, according to NokiaPowerUser, because of both phones' lack of optical image stabilization (OIS). But with the flash disabled, there's a huge boost in quality from the previous version of the camera application — it's clear that there's much more to the update than a simple redesign.

The app also seems to improve on the phones' autofocus timings. The cameras are capable of focusing on objects much more quickly, especially in dimly lit environments.
It seems Nokia has gone all in on the camera app update, which is a welcome break from tradition — and a huge upgrade for these devices. It's currently unclear whether the Nokia 8 will receive the new camera app, but it's not unlikely, given that the phone's one of HMD Global's flagship devices.
