Duo, Google's cross-platform video-calling app, is being updated with another feature that puts it above the competition. Users can now send a "video voicemail" up to 30 seconds long. Just like an old-fashioned voicemail, it allows users leave a message when somebody can't come to the phone (or declines your call). Users can also opt to leave a regular audio-only voicemail if they wish. The feature is rolling out globally now and should be available for both Android and iOS in the coming days.
When someone declines your call or the call goes unanswered, the caller will be prompted to leave a video or audio voicemail. The receiving party will receive a notification and can play the video or voice message through the Google Duo application. Once you've watched it, a "Call now" button will appear so you can call the sender back immediately. The sender shouldn't worry about getting it right the first time either. The video or audio voicemail can be recorded and repeated again and again until the sender is happy with it.
This allows you to send a moment that you wanted to share with someone straight away. It's almost like sending a video on Snapchat or Instagram. It ensures your friends or family aren't left out, and what's more, shows that Google is serious about its video calling platform. With other features on the horizon as well, Google Duo is only getting better and better. We saw last year that it seems to have been pretty successful, but that may also be attributed to the fact it now comes preinstalled on most Android phones as part of Google's suite of applications. Either way, we're excited to see what new features Google will add to their FaceTime competitor in the future.
